Choosing the perfect interior door

Interior doors define a space, reduce sound, help to control the temperature, and provide privacy, but they also add character to your home. While some doors blend into the background, others command your attention and complement your decor seamlessly.

Here’s what to keep in mind when you’re shopping for new interior doors:

Start with the basics

There are three basic types of doors, and the first step is figuring out the type you need. Do you want a standard all-panel door? Or are you interested in glass-paneled French doors? If it’s a smaller space or closet with a tight entrance, a bi-fold door might be the best solution.

Choose a line

Once you know the type of door you want, go a step further and determine a style you like -- and that fits with the vibe of your home. JELD-WEN Windows and Doors makes it simple by breaking it down into four categories:

  • Stile and Rail Wood
  • Moulded Wood Composite
  • Executive Series Raised Mouldings
  • Flush Wood Composite

Bring in the details

While four-panel and six-panel doors are pretty standard, they’re far from the only option. Shake panel doors are clean and modern with 16 different panel configurations, and there are even more varieties of classic Colonial panel doors. And while most people picture a standard 16-pane French door, you’ll be blown away by the different arrangements of glass panes, panels and trims.

Customize it to your liking

The best part of ordering interior doors is that you can choose exactly what’s going to work in your unique space. Do you love the look of wood grain or a smooth wood finish, or are you dying to splash some colour on those new doors? Make it easier on yourself by ordering them pre-primed.

Barn-style doors make a fantastic statement, but that’s not all. They’re functional, allowing you to close off an entire room with just one door. They’re great for areas where swing space is limited, and they’re really easy to install. Plus Richelieu has an incredible variety of hardware and accessories to give your barn-style doors the perfect finishing touches.

The Ultimate Ice Fishing Shack

Fishing is a great way to get a free meal when you’re up at the cottage. But once winter hits and the lake freezes over, fishing gets a whole lot harder, not to mention, colder. We all know the age-old ritual of ice-fishing but when the ideal lake for ice-fishing is several miles away, there are numerous impediments, not the least of which is the prospect of hauling a large, potentially heavy, ice-fishing shack over a long distance out onto a frozen lake. With the latest Brojects creation, the Ultimate Ice Fishing Shack, we sought to address all those concerns and more.

Tips for Siding

Is your siding doing its job? Learn how to prevent rotting and damage to your exterior. Sam from Safe Guard Home Inspection shares some very important do’s and don’ts. Even in the winter time, siding inspections are an important task to check for damage. For more project advice, visit your local Timber Mart location.

Insulation 101

Insulation isn’t just that fluffy pink stuff that you see when a wall is opened up, and it’s certainly not something you never have to think about again once your house has been built.

There are different types of insulation for the different areas of your home, from the interior walls, floor and ceilings to the attic, basement, crawl space and exposed floors.

Think of your home’s insulation as a really awesome travel mug -- keeping your drink at the perfect temperature, despite what’s going on around it, so you don’t have to keep microwaving it or adding ice cubes.

When you have the right insulation for your particular home (and climate), you get to enjoy a few pretty spectacular benefits...

You’ll spend less on heating and cooling your home. Hooray for extra moolah that can be spent on something way more fun. New furniture? New flooring? New appliances?

Your home will maintain a more comfortable temperature. Drafts? Chilly spots? Super-hot bedrooms? Nope, not at your place. Your casa will be the most comfortable spot around.

You’ll enjoy a more peaceful home. Sound-absorbent insulation uses stone wool to help absorb acoustic waves and reduce the intensity of noise. Staying up late to watch TV will no longer mean turning the volume way down, and maybe you won’t dread the day your child brings home a recorder (nah, you’ll still dread it).

You and your family will be safer. Did you know you can get fire-resistant insulation that delays the spread of fire, giving you and your loves more time to get out safely? This special kind of insulation doesn’t burn or release toxic gases and smoke when it’s exposed to high heat.

You won’t have to worry about wet, moldy insulation. Water-repellent insulation won’t slump in the wall if it’s exposed to moisture so your home’s R-value won’t be affected. This kind of insulation also doesn’t support mold or fungal growth, helping you and your family breathe easier.
